October’s here and that means summer is officially over! Everyone loves to make money and save money all year round, but it’s always nice to save a little extra in the winter months – especially when Christmas is around the corner. Take a look at our 31 money-saving tips and money-making ideas – one for every day of the month in October.

1 October: Make money cleaning.

 

Your very own cleaning business – how does that sound? Cleaning is one of the most hated household jobs and something many of us put off until it’s absolutely desperate. 2 October: Make money by switching your bank account.

3 October: Get free food.

4 October: Make money collecting. 

Make money collecting Ladybird books, Bakelite, whiskey, film and music memorabilia, comics, Barbie dolls, Chinese snuff bottles and even Elvis Presley memorabilia. Can you turn your collecting hobby into a money-making opportunity?

 

5 October: Set up a standing order into an ISA.

12 October: Save money with voucher codes.

13 October: Have a zero-spend day. 

Use your local library for books, magazines, music and film. Use your points to buy things such as Boots or Superdrug cards for toiletries, Tesco Clubcard for dinners in restaurants and Avios for a trip to a theme park. 14 October: Get a free family pass for National trust. 

 

 

You can currently get free entry to National Trust sites across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. For a limited time, you can nab a free ticket, which allows entry to a huge number of historical and interesting sites for you and the family. 

The best part? The ticket allows for up to two adults and four children to enter a National Trust site for free. Yes, you read that correctly. You can get free entry for six people. Adults, of course, are those aged 18 years and over, and children count as those aged between five and 17 years old. Those under the age of five get free entry to National Trust properties anyway. 

15 October: Make money being a researcher.

16 October: Make a budget. 

Sounds dull, but doing a budget – even a basic one – will help you build wealth. Use an online budget planner like ours; simply enter your expenses and income and you’ll see what you have left over to spend each month. It should spur you on to cut your expenses and increase your income too.

17 October: Make money from your old mobiles and gadgets.

18 October: Buy cheap Christmas presents.

22 October: Watch Free Movies

Can we even watch films for free? It’s well reported in the news lately that the cost of living crisis has affected the way we spend our money somewhat casually on streaming services like Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime. Thousands upon thousands of people just can’t afford to make all those payments right now, and Netflix has just reported a drop-off of 1 million viewers in the last year. 

One of the problems is that there is too much choice, but that also means there’s a LOT of choice, so we’ve rooted around to find the best FREE streaming services where you can watch free movies, usually extremely simply or with a free sign-up. So here we go. 

 

23 October: Make money with ads on your car.

Taxis and buses do it, so why not your car? If you don’t mind driving around with a logo splashed across your bonnet, you could make more than £200 a month for very little effort. Find out how to make with ads on your car here.

24 October: Make money pet sitting.

If you love animals, pet sitting and pet boarding can be an easy and fun way to make money at home. As over 50% of British families own a pet and many of them go on holiday without their animals, there’s a lot of money to be made by offering doggy daycare. 25 October: Prepare a budget Halloween. 

Halloween is only a week away! Prepare a budget Halloween party by revamping your costumes from the previous year and cut out silhouettes of cats, witches and pumpkins and hang them from the ceiling with string. For food, add ketchup to the end of chips to make them look like bloody fingers. Lychees with a raisin in the middle and Ribena drizzled over them look like bloodshot eyes. 26 October: Save yourself £1,000 over the year by switching. 

Pour yourself a nice cuppa and settle down with your computer to switch everything using our comparison service. Get the best deal on your gas and electricity, all your insurances, your phone and broadband providers and even your bank. Over the next year you should be able to save around £1,000 by doing this.

27 October: Claim free money.

28 October: Use your lunch hour to make some money online.

Do a few online surveys while you’re on the computer and having a sandwich. You can make a few quid in an hour. Start with the online survey companies we recommend here.

29 October: Save on Halloween food.

For kids it’s easy to pick up a bag of sweets, but for adults you might want something a little more sophisticated if you’re planning a Halloween get together.

 

30 October: Get ready to make a will. 

November is Will Aid month where some solicitors will write your will and give their fee directly to charity. The suggested minimum donation is £100 for a single will and £180 for a pair of mirror wills. If you don’t make a will your inheritors could pay thousands in tax and if you’re cohabiting your partner won’t automatically get your money or property.
