Every month, we bring you the UK’s cheapest supermarket, according to consumer website Which?. Every single month they compare thousands of prices at eight of the UK’s biggest supermarkets – Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose
Last month, we revealed that in 2023 Aldi dominated the top spot, with competitor LIDL only getting the top spot once for the whole year.
This month we take a look at whether ALDI will continue their reign of glory for 2024, or whether another supermarket is upping its budget game
Nope they still have it …Aldi is still in on top!
Aldi was the cheapest of the eight UK biggest supermarkets, with a basket of items costing £76.77 on average, while Lidl was just 79p behind, with an average cost of £77.56, according to consumer group Which?.
Which also compared the cost of a larger trolley analysis, including a mix of 134 branded and own-brand items, Asdawas the cheapest once again this month (£328.15), followed by Morrison’swhich was £10.01 more expensive.
The analysis also showed that Waitrose was the most expensive supermarket for a big shop this month, at £369.80 for the same list of groceries. Sainsbury’s was the next priciest, at £360.26 for those without a loyalty card – almost £10 cheaper than high-end Waitrose.
Once again, this analysis from Which? shows that considerable savings can be made by consumers, depending on where they tend to shop for food. Whilst more supermarkets are introducing discounts and value brands, more must be done to support consumers with rising food costs.
“The price of food and drink has continued to soar as people suffer through the worst cost-of-living crisis in decades. It’s no surprise to see many people turning to discounters like Aldi and Lidl when our research shows they could save up to £17 on a basket of everyday groceries by doing so.
“Supermarkets aren’t currently doing enough to help shoppers. Which? believes the big retailers have a responsibility to ensure everyone has easy access to basic, affordable food ranges at a store near them, and to provide transparent and comparable pricing so people can easily work out which products offer the best value.”
GREAT IDEA!

[…] Aldi has been named the most cost effective grocery store within the UK in Which Journal for 15 cons… […]
Home Bargaains is a lower-cost destination for a top-up shop. It sells a good range of fresh, chilled and frozen staples, amny of which are top brands.
Agree with this for some things. Shopping across lots of different shops has strengths in lots of areas…. Even M&S has some bargains these days
